VIDEO: Freehanding in Watercolor

This walkthrough features over an hour of real time painting with a few sped up bits as I go over my process of free handing my piece  “The Lonely King” and discuss what it is like working on a super textured watercolor ground prepared surface and the quirks that come along with it!

Mediums

Surface: 

5x7 hardboard  panel 

2 coats Daniel Smith watercolor ground in Titanium White 

1 coat QoR watercolor ground (their standard ground, not the hot or cold press) 

Brushes: 

10/0 Princeton Select Spotter (dull tip, great for doing loose linework without worrying about damaging brush) 

10/0 Master’s Touch Round (very old and fuzzy, great for bringing out soft, subtle textures in paint) 

10/0 Premier Amethyst Spotter

13mm Zen Royal & Langnickel flat brush 

Paints

Yellow Light (unknown brand) 

Burgundy Yellow Ochre by Daniel Smith

Carbazole Violet by Daniel Smith

Prussian Blue by Daniel Smith 

Phthalo Green by Daniel Smith 

Thalo Blue by Grumbacher
