How I Prep for Gallery Shows

Hello!

Because my solo show Mountaincholia, at Valkarie Gallery, is only days away, I wanted to make short video (one of my “Waxing Moon Sessions”) on how I prepare for gallery shows.   The piece I am working on the video is part of my show and is called “The Hunt” Stay tuned to the end of the video for something I am super excited to share!

In the video, I talked about a number of questions I like to  use when planning shows and so I wanted to write those questions down for you in case it could be a useful resource.  These are some of the main things I like to keep in mind and even write down for myself when taking notes about an upcoming show.

Is it a group show, or a solo show?

What day is the opening reception (this can be different than the day the show hangs)

How long will the art hang for?

What are all the deadlines for the show (such as when the venue needs show images by, when pieces should be delivered or shipped, etc.)

What are the hanging requirements for the art (should it be framed, etc.)

How many pieces will you need to create?  (If not specified, I would recommend getting measurements or a layout of the wall space.  Visit the venue in person if possible, take pictures and make notes so that you can plan accordingly.)

Will the venue allow for print sales and if so, are there requirements for the prints themselves? (Most prints should at least be presented individually bagged with some kind of backing board for protection)

What is the commission rate of the gallery? How much of a percentage will they take?

Next, I recommend making a list of your personal deadlines for the show such as...

When should all work be finished, when should framing be done, and  when should work be dropped off with scanners.

When should other tasks be completed (business card ordering, fliers, etc.)

What kind of promotion will be used (social media posting, paid promotion, etc.) and what are the deadlines for those promotions?

As for the announcement at the end of the video, I hope you are as excited as I am!

P.S.  I have not forgotten about the art chats you voted on but I want to make the career based chat after my solo show as there are a few bits of insight I hope to garner for you therein! <3

Be well~
