Her Life as a Shelter - framed original painting
This listing is for the original painting Her Life as a Shelter
To leave the mortal plane and catch hold of the cosmos
To dance in the rain, way out there all alone
You left her behind, but both of you still knows
That the shelter you’d find would bring you back home
Have you ever walked into a house and felt its soul? Its presence like a living entity calling you back to it or chasing you away?
I believe the places where we dwell take on our energy, haunted by our thoughts, feelings, happiness, and tragedies. This energy can grow, unraveling in an endless layering of thoughts and personalities, becoming like their own full person at times. I have such a place where multiple generations of my family have added on to the layers, and you can feel it like a breathing beast. These places can be both sacred, or terrifying, or sometimes both. I frequently depict such places in my art through little living buildings, often featuring an eye hidden in the attic or, sometimes, a large mouth instead of a door. Being mindful of what we put into a space is very important to me, for long have my dreams been haunted by every place I’ve ever lived. Home can be many different things, and it isn’t always singular. But, even if we’re only passing through, perhaps it would benefit those who come after us if we were to remember to send a bit of gratitude to the shelters that so kindly hold us, even if only for a night.
