The bramble and ivy had begun to take hold
I moved onward regardless and let the garden unfold
A dear friend told me that as we grow older, we take on layers based on our experiences. At first, the layers may seem light, easy to carry, and so we take on more. In time, these layers may become so heavy that it’s as if we’ve grown a tangle of bramble that’s hard to see a way out of. What we often fail to remember when we’re feeling so weighed down is the beautiful things, small blossoms of hope that may be hard to see among the thorns but are there regardless, and have room to spread if we nourish them.
I have taken to imagining my life as a garden, and each decision that I make is a seed that I plant. As such, I try to think about what I’m planting more consciously than I did when I was younger. And although weeds are an inevitable part of this process, their own seeds blowing in with life, I feel that if we trust in the intentional decisions that we pull from deep within ourselves, we’ll find a way to grow resilient against life’s many sharp places and push forward with the strength of what we’ve grown.
